Liz wrote the following personal essay about the winter storm for a school assignment:
Snowmageddon
A few weeks ago, there was a “snow storm” in central Texas. It wasn’t too hard for my family, but it was stressful, and scary. I found out that it would snow when my mom got a weather report about a snowstorm in our area, she said we better get our coats ready for some fun in the snow! My mom made this announcement a bit before the snowstorm, maybe Monday or Tuesday in our kitchen at dinner; it didn’t seem like a big deal, because it had snowed a few weeks before, and we had lots of fun!
I had no idea what was coming, first it started snowing powdery snow, and a few hours later, we had up to six inches of snow! The next day, my siblings and I got onto our computers to do our schoolwork.
When I got a few hours into it, the internet went down, the power went out, our water was unclean, and our temperature dropped down to 58 degrees! My dad set up a fire in the fireplace to keep us warm, and we brought all of our pillows and blankets too. To pass the time, we did 500 piece puzzles, read lots of books, and played card games!
That night, we slept in the living room with a warm fire to fight off the cold of the night. The next morning the power was still out, but we did what we did yesterday; played games, read books, and do puzzles. We did that the next day too, and then the power came back on! But the water still wasn’t clean, so we went under a “boil water” notice to kill the germs. Eventually things went back to normal, considering the weather, and now we don’t have to worry about things like that for a while.
This was a significant experience for me because this has never happened to me before. It has snowed a few times in my lifetime, but never have I been through a snowstorm and a black out at the same time. I learned it is important to be prepared for anything and everything, and that even when things are difficult, you can still make the best of it!
