Expository Essay

Heidi wrote the following expository essay for a school assignment:

A Special Friend

The dictionary defines a friend as one attached to another by respect or affection. I think this means that if we are nice and show qualities of a good friend then somebody will be a friend and show those qualities back. I think three qualities of a good friend are kind, helpful, and funny.

Kindness is a quality that most people want in a friend. I think a kind friend is kind to everybody around them, even if the person they are kind to isn’t their kind to them. I have a friend and no matter how people treat her she is always kind back. Another quality of a good friend is helpfulness. Once when I was in Kindergarten a friend came over to my house to play but since we were little we didn’t know better so when it was almost time for her to leave, my room was a humongous mess. It looked like a wrecking ball went through my room. There were clothes everywhere and the beds were a mess and there was a horrible smell. My friend was about to leave but she decided to help me clean before she went home. It only took about ten minutes to clean up but by the time we finished her parents had come to pick her up. This is another reason why I think a good quality of a friend is helpfulness. Another good quality of a friend is being funny. Sometimes people get sad and they need someone to cheer them up with a joke. Did you know that laughter is the best medicine? It relieves pain relieving hormones that make you feel better. Sometimes we just need a friend to make us laugh, even if it’s just a small joke.

I think that the qualities of a good friend are: kind, helpful, and funny and a lesson I have learned from writing this essay is that it doesn’t matter how the friend looks, it matters how they treat others and yourself.
